Wondering who she is, I walk toward her. As I come closer, four more limbs grow out of her sides and her body stretches until she becomes gigantic. An instant later, she floats up above the earth and turns into a dazzling spider. Her eight legs spread out across the sky. Gazing up, I realize she is Biliku-waye, the most powerful of the spirits, who holds the sun and moon and stars in her web each night. “Go to the beach at once, Uido,” she commands. Her voice is beautiful and terrifying. Suddenly my dream ends and I awake.
I do not want to wait another day. Lah-ame smiles and lays a gnarled finger on my lips as if he were trying to quiet a baby. “Tomorrow morning I will gather the En-ge together and say why I have chosen you as my apprentice. It is best if everyone hears this from me at the same time. After that, they will move south for the rainy season. ” I slap my thighs with my palms to show my joy. Lah-ame scoops me onto his back as though I were as little as Tawai. We laugh, and his laughter seems to roll out from the pit of his stomach and rise up beyond the cliff top.
Suddenly, an image enters my mind of a person standing on a beach. At first the picture is murky but it sharpens as I concentrate. As the vision brightens, my skin tingles and my spirit fills with the same awe as when I dream of the Otherworld. ” I say. “I hear the rattling leaves of a coconut palm. ” When I finish speaking, the image grows dim. I open my eyes. He pats my hand. His touch feels as reassuring as Danna’s. “I was born on the island you saw, Uido. ” I know Lah-ame and the other elders in our tribe were born on another island and that they came here to get away from the strangers.
