Herman subsequently wrote to the headmaster, reversing his decision: ‘I spent yesterday afternoon with Geoffrey and got closer to him than I have ever succeeded in getting before. He really opened up and assured me that he had realised from what I had said to him that he had been thoughtless and selfish and that he realised that his manners had got to be changed. ’ Life continued much as before for the next two years: Herman fretting and Geoff getting up to God knows what, but now playing enough within the rules to ensure he stayed in England and at Downside.

1 That said, I reckon you could have put Geoff anywhere, any time, and he’d have charmed the birds from the trees. He was just one of those guys. I’ve long believed that 10 per cent of the guys probably get 90 per cent of the girls. He was in the top 1 per cent of that 10 per cent, still causing mayhem with female hearts late into his sixties. Not that he got much time for playing the lover early on. He was pitched straight into the massed tank actions of the Western Desert, which could be on a par with the battles of the First War for percentage loss of life and low survival rates.

It took me many years to fully understand that I should revel in being different and that, as humans, we can tick many of the same boxes and yet be so very different. Thus, while Geoff and I might have shared many similar experiences, that does not mean that I will necessarily ever come to understand him. He was clearly made from a somewhat alternative mould. So, should he and I meet in Valhalla, and should I have got some things wrong in this, his book, I hope he treats me kindly. It is a foolish man who gets on the wrong side of Mister Major Geoff.
