Aristotle, followed much later by Northrop Frye, defined the available literature in universally recurring groups or categories, labelled, amongst others, epic, tragedy and comedy. These have often been taken as the basic, universal categories of literature, but have then become unworkably broad. When Frye took the whole body of literature non-historically, and attempted to find its recurring patterns, he came up with the broadest and vaguest of categories, with little 61 discriminatory power. 35 Rather than follow this universalist scheme I want to see genres as the various kinds of literature recognised a~ any given historical moment.
