The bulk of these were on “economic” topics like “Of Taxes” and “Of Money” and were self-consciously “intellectual” in that Hume prefaced the first essay in the collection (“Of Commerce”) with a defense of “philosophers” who attend to the “general course of things” (E-Com: 254).
