The second, Process B, is of special interest for the problem I am posing in this chapter. In one of its phases it is the analysand who, actively though unconsciously, projects his internal situations into the analyst, who acts as a passive receptacle. But in this case two situations may occur: (1) the emotional echo that arises in the analyst may be due to his own conflicts or anxieties, intensified or reactivated by the patient's conflicting material; (2) the affective response may be largely independent of his own emotions and mainly or exclusively a response to what the analysand projects into him.

Focusing upon this alteration of reality is often a crucial preparatory step for the interpretation of a projective identification. 39 The interpretation that was eventually offered involved explicit reference to: the patient's unconscious conception of a loss of a valued part of himself that had resulted from Mr J's departure; the defensive fantasy of locating the weak self in the therapist; and the reality of the interpersonal interaction by means of which these fantasies were enacted. The patient's enhanced capacity to experience feelings of loss as represented in the dream, served as a partial validation for the interpretation.
