The Balkan peoples’ outbursts of genocidal fury, which so stunned the world in the last decade of the twentieth century, apparently required only minimal ideological or cultural justification beyond orally transmitted “folk wisdom” and inflammatory newspaper stories. Hostility toward Jews, by contrast, has produced an enormous body of literature; permeated Christian and, now, Islamic culture; found expression in the arts, high and low; and informed both the theory and the practice of politics all over the globe.
