A major theme of general practice at UCD has been the recruitment of general practitioners to academic life. The Coombe Healthcare Centre in Dublin’s inner-city heartland is the shared clinical base for academic staff. It underpins the clinical, professional and psychosocial themes of the modules delivered by general practice. Professors Walter Cullen and Andrew Murphy were key members of staff moving to Limerick and Galway respectively. At the other end of the spectrum, the practice now hosts general practice interns – a learning enterprise for us all!

A social anthropologist, Roisin Pill, joined the staff as a research fellow and publication of original work on teaching and research fronts was commonplace. Funding was a major headache because the university expected the NHS earnings of the practice to pay for most academic costs. Furthermore the clinical academics on university salary scales were severely disadvantaged in comparison with their full-time service colleagues yet they carried heavy clinical responsibility and suffered the growing university pressure to win research grants for the kudos, funding and publications that The Cardiff University School of Medicine 21 followed.

In contrast, the 28 Academic General Practice in the UK, 1948–2000 Cork postgraduate vocational training scheme in general practice based at UCC went from strength to strength in the 1980s under the direction of Cork general practitioner Bill Shannon. Moves to set up a department of general practice began in 1989 when Tom O’Dowd was offered the new chair of general practice.
